Momos are a beloved street food across India, but are they actually good for your health?

While they taste delicious, frequent consumption of momos—especially from street vendors—can negatively impact your health in several ways. Most momos are made with refined flour (maida), which is low in fiber and hard to digest, leading to problems like constipation and bloating. Fried momos, in particular, are loaded with unhealthy fats and oils, increasing the risk of obesity and heart disease. Additionally, many vendors use MSG (Ajinomoto) to enhance flavor, which can cause headaches, fatigue, and other nervous system issues when consumed regularly. Street food hygiene is another major concern, with risks of food poisoning due to poor water quality or stale ingredients. Lastly, momos offer minimal nutritional value and are often full of sodium, artificial flavors, and preservatives—especially in frozen or packaged varieties. While eating momos occasionally is fine, making them a regular part of your diet may cause more harm than you realize. Choosing steamed, homemade, or whole-wheat versions is a much healthier alternative.
