Puducherry Becomes First to Screen Families for TB Under Family Adoption Programme

In a significant public health initiative, Puducherry has become the first region in India to integrate tuberculosis (TB) screening under the Family Adoption Programme (FAP). As part of the programme, medical students adopt families in local communities — and now, they are also tasked with screening every family member for TB.

The initiative aims to boost early detection and prevention of TB by making use of the strong community links already established through the FAP. This proactive step aligns with India’s goal to eliminate TB by 2025.

According to officials, early-stage screening can significantly reduce transmission and improve treatment outcomes. The programme also strengthens community health education and promotes regular follow-ups by medical students.

This move by Puducherry sets a precedent for other states to replicate the model, combining medical education, community engagement, and preventive healthcare.
