It Is Almost Like an Investment”: Ameesha Patel Explains Why a Hermes Birkin Is Considered the “Rolls-Royce of Bags

Bollywood star Ameesha Patel has once again given us something to talk about—not with a film this time, but with her luxury bag collection, particularly her Hermes Birkin. Known among aficionados as a status symbol, the Birkin has often been likened to the Rolls-Royce of handbags. Ameesha’s perspective adds depth: she doesn’t just see it as luxury or design—it’s almost like an investment.

The Most Expensive Bag in Her Collection

Ameesha revealed in an interview that her most expensive bag currently is a croc-skin Hermes Birkin, valued between ₹60-70 lakh. She says that this bag is so rare, difficult to come by, that one might wait for years just to get one.

She also commented that the price tag is comparable to that of buying a house in some places. It’s not just about the craftsmanship or the brand—it’s about the exclusivity, the exotic skin, the rarity, and the waiting list.

Why Birkin Is the “Rolls-Royce of Bags” According to Her

Rarity and waiting period: These bags are not mass-produced; getting one often involves being on a waitlist, sometimes for five to ten years.

Exotic materials: Crocodile skin, exotic leathers, rare colours add huge value. When leather ages (for example, lighter or pastel colours darkening over time), it sometimes adds to the desirability.

Appreciation in value: Ameesha has noted that some of her bags sell for double what she originally paid. The rarity plus demand means some Birkin bags increase in value over time.

Brand prestige and symbolism: Hermes has long held prestige in craft, finish, heritage. A Birkin is more than a bag; it’s almost a status symbol, a collector’s piece. Ameesha points out that to own one, especially an exotic one, is to own something that many aspire to but few achieve.

Her Collection & Personal Views

Ameesha Patel started collecting designer bags when she was about 12-13 years old

She owns 16 Birkin bags of various shapes, sizes, colours.

One of her favourite Birkin bags is the croc version in pink; she says the leather has aged over about 15 years, making it rarer. 1

She treats her bags with a lot of care—store them properly, protect them—and has often joked that if she hadn’t been a bag collector, she might have invested in property instead. Her collection is reportedly valuable enough that if she sold or valued many of the bags, the sum could buy a penthouse in Mumbai.

The Investment Angle

Ameesha’s view of luxury bags leans toward the idea that some are alternative assets, not unlike art or rare collectibles. Key points:

These items can appreciate over time, especially if kept well in pristine condition.

Limited edition releases, exotic leathers, rare colours all help in increasing resale value.

In some markets (including references to how Birkin bags globally are perceived), these bags are almost considered luxury investments—some people hold them not only for fashion but as storehouses of value. Ameesha explicitly said that “it is almost like an investment.

Public Reaction & Context

Fans and the media are fascinated by her collection. The fact that she owns 300-400 designer bags is often mentioned.

There are occasional criticisms (humorous or serious) about whether buying so many luxury items is “practical,” but Ameesha seems unapologetic. She clearly values the aesthetic, the craftsmanship, and the rarity, alongside the emotional satisfaction.

Comparisons are drawn with celebrities globally who own Birkin bags, and how sometimes these bags cost even more, or come with diamond work etc., pushing the price into lakhs or even crores. But Ameesha observes that hers, while extremely expensive, are “cheaper” compared to the ultra-high end ones.
