US Vice President JD Vance Visits Taj Mahal, Calls India ‘A Friend’ Amid Push for Stronger Trade Ties

U.S. Vice President JD Vance concluded his four-day diplomatic visit to India with a family tour of the Taj Mahal in Agra, highlighting the cultural and strategic dimensions of the trip. Earlier, in Jaipur, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the importance of strengthening U.S.-India relations, particularly in defense, energy, and trade sectors. Vance advocated for increased Indian purchases of American defense equipment, such as F-35 fighter jets, and expanded energy cooperation, including offshore gas and nuclear energy development. He also praised India's economic vitality and Modi's leadership, acknowledging ongoing trade deal negotiations aimed at concluding the first phase by autumn .

During his visit, Vance addressed concerns about President Donald Trump's tariff strategy, highlighting the administration's focus on fair trade and repositioning the U.S. economically, especially as a counterbalance to China. He stressed that India and the U.S. could shape a prosperous and peaceful 21st century through collaboration 

 

The visit also included cultural exchanges, such as a blessing ceremony with elephants in Jaipur, and a tour of the Akshardham Temple in New Delhi . Vance's trip underscores the growing importance of the U.S.-India partnership in addressing global challenges and fostering mutual development.
