Bloomington, IN —
As the U.S. continues to levy tariffs on Chinese imports, Indiana’s local economy could be hit hard, with up to 42,000 jobs potentially at risk, according to a new study by the Indiana Business Research Center (IBRC) at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
While current economic indicators like unemployment rates and GDP growth haven’t yet reflected this strain, experts warn that the real impact could be slow-moving but significant, particularly in regions heavily reliant on manufacturing and imported goods.
The IBRC’s analysis focuses on household goods and industrial supply chains, areas where Chinese imports play a crucial role. Many small and mid-sized businesses in Bloomington and the wider region rely on these imports, either for retail sales or as components in their production processes.
"Though we haven't seen major shocks yet, the data suggests underlying vulnerabilities," said an IBRC economist. "Job losses may not be immediate, but they are very possible as companies adjust or relocate supply chains."
As residents in Bloomington read conflicting news about tariffs, this local data offers a rare look at how trade policy may play out closer to home. The center emphasizes that while the estimate is a projection, it should be a call to action for businesses and policymakers.
