Dubai’s skyline keeps rewriting itself, but the latest addition is more than just height or glitz—it’s a statement. On 25 October 2025, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, officially unveiled the new landmark: the Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA). This marvel is set to float above the waters of Dubai Creek, merging heritage, culture and architectural boldness.
Vision & Cultural Significance:
Sheikh Mohammed described the museum as “a museum that floats above the waters of Dubai Creek to enhance its brilliance and to reflect Dubai’s civilised spirit and serve as a mirror of its culture and arts.” He emphasised that culture and art are not just luxuries, but the very soul of a city—"a lens through which its progress is seen.”
This launch signals Dubai’s ambition to cement itself as a global capital of creativity—a place where artists from every corner of the world converge, where local heritage meets global dialogue, and where architecture itself becomes a part of the art.
Architecture & Design:
The museum is being developed by the Al‑Futtaim Group and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando—a name synonymous with minimalist concrete structures that harmonise light, nature and space.
Rising five storeys above the water, DUMA features a unique form: inspired by the sea and the pearl—symbols deeply rooted in Dubai’s maritime and pearling heritage. Its shell-like curved exterior encloses a circular exhibition hall, and a central cylindrical opening allows natural light to cascade inside, evoking a shimmering pearl in motion.
Inside, the museum will host adaptable exhibition galleries on the first and second floors, a restaurant and VIP lounge on the third floor, plus ground and basement levels.
Location & Experience:
Set on an island in the heart of Dubai Creek, DUMA will place visitors amidst water, sky and skyline. The interplay of the natural setting and architecture promises an immersive experience: exhibitions overlooking water, light changing through the day, the reflection of heritage in modern form.
More than just galleries, the museum will host artist talks, panel discussions, educational programmes, art fairs, a library, study rooms and training programmes—making it a living, breathing creative hub, not just a static building.
Private Sector & Sustainability:
Sheikh Mohammed made a point of recognising the role of the private sector in delivering such landmarks: he thanked Abdullah Al Futtaim and his son Omar Al Futtaim for their role, calling DUMA a “model for the private sector’s responsibility towards its community and its home city.”
He further noted: “Cities are completed by culture and art … and flourish through the economy … and achieve harmony and entrench their sustainability when their private sector is responsible, participatory, and aligned with its public sector. And this is what we see in Dubai.”

What This Means for Dubai & Beyond:
For Dubai: It reinforces the emirate’s cultural credentials, adding a new landmark to its already iconic skyline. It signals investment not just in buildings, but in people, creativity and heritage.
For art and architecture: DUMA stands at the intersection of nature, heritage and innovation—challenging conventional museum design by floating above water and evoking symbolism.
For visitors and creatives: It offers a destination where art, light, water, and architecture blend—where the global and the local meet, where learning complements viewing, and where the environment itself becomes part of the exhibition.
In Conclusion:
If you’re wondering what Dubai is chasing—this is it. A place where culture is visible, architecture is daring, and experience is immersive. The Dubai Museum of Art is more than just a building—it’s a vision made concrete (and glass, and water) of a city that refuses to stand still.
