According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2022 report, India registered 31,516 rape cases, with 33,479 individuals arrested. Rajasthan led the nation with the highest number of reported rapes (5,399), followed by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. While the total number of crimes against women crossed 4.45 lakh, only about 27% of rape cases led to conviction, revealing the deep challenges in the justice system.

Most victims (over 66%) were aged between 18 and 30 years, and a small proportion of cases—about 9.6%—were marked as false after investigation, debunking common myths about mass misuse of rape laws. Despite stricter post-Nirbhaya laws, India's legal process for sexual violence cases remains slow and burdened, with over 130,000 rape-related cases still pending trial. The data highlights the urgent need for legal reforms, faster trials, and greater support for victims in India.
