JAIPUR: Authorities in Rajasthan have seized 22,138 litres of suspected adulterated ghee valued at approximately Rs 1.60 crore and arrested three individuals following coordinated raids on two trading firms in Sri Ganganagar district. The operation was carried out jointly by the CID Crime Branch, local police, and food safety officials as part of a statewide crackdown on spurious food products ahead of Diwali.
Alongside the massive haul of dairy stock, enforcement teams recovered Rs 3.50 lakh in cash allegedly generated from illegal sales. Investigators identified the arrested accused as Ram Tayal, 26, Mukesh Kumar, 24, and Vikas Kumar, 42. Initial findings suggest that expired and returned stocks were systematically collected, repackaged in fresh containers, and released back into the retail market under brand-new labels to mislead consumers during peak festive shopping.
The first phase of the operation targeted the manufacturing and storage premises of Ananya Trading Company, where officials confiscated 16,394 litres of suspected counterfeit ghee. The team found stock packaged under several commercial labels, including Trisalwa, Bansuri, Shrinand, and Mayra. Officers also discovered stacks of expired stock, unlabelled tins, rolls of brand stickers, fresh packaging materials, and industrial packing machinery believed to be instrumental in the repackaging workflow.
During initial questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to collecting expired and returned ghee consignments, affixing fresh labels, and pushing the stock back into circulation. Investigators believe the primary objective of the unit was to give spoiled dairy goods a clean commercial identity before routing them to local retailers and wholesale dealers. The police are expanding their inquiry to identify whether other regional traders, stockists, and distributors formed part of this deceptive distribution network.
Enforcement officers suspect that large quantities of vanaspati and palm oil sourced from Gujarat were blended into the products to cut production costs and mimic authentic ghee. The adulterated supplies were distributed across networks serving Sri Ganganagar and neighbouring commercial hubs. Investigators are currently scrutinising transport logs, material procurement records, and billing receipts to reconstruct the operational pipeline and gauge the overall scale of the illicit enterprise.
Samples from the seized batches were collected by food safety inspectors and dispatched to government laboratories for detailed chemical analysis. Authorities noted that the exact chemical profile and the degree of contamination can only be established after forensic test reports arrive. Following the completion of searches and sampling procedures, the warehouse was sealed to prevent any tampering or further dispatch of goods.
Suratgarh Bypass Facility Sealed as Inquiries Continue The crackdown simultaneously extended to New Vijay Trading Company, located along the Suratgarh Bypass, where the joint team uncovered an additional 5,744 litres of suspected adulterated ghee. Officials drew representative samples from this site as well for laboratory testing, pushing the total seizure across both locations to 22,138 litres. Authorities indicated that formal penal and regulatory action under applicable food safety legislation will proceed once laboratory evaluations confirm the presence of prohibited additives or hazardous substances.
