Delhi’s Happiness Curriculum: A Transformative Shift in School Education

Delhi’s Happiness Curriculum, launched in July 2018, is revolutionizing the way students are educated in government schools.

With a core focus on mindfulness, emotional well-being, and social-emotional learning (SEL), this innovative curriculum reaches over one million students from Nursery to Grade 8 across the capital. It includes daily activities such as silent sitting, storytelling, reflective questions, and group discussions—encouraging children to become emotionally aware, empathetic, and resilient.
Designed by the Delhi government and implemented by SCERT with support from education NGOs, the initiative has received international recognition. It has inspired similar programs in Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Nepal, Afghanistan, and the UAE, highlighting its far-reaching impact.
Recently, the curriculum is evolving into a new format called “Science of Living”, set to be implemented from August 2025. This upgraded version aims to address modern challenges like digital addiction, lack of emotional resilience, and disconnection from real-world relationships. By integrating yoga, mindfulness, and value-based life lessons, it continues to promote holistic development beyond academics.
Delhi’s Happiness Curriculum is a powerful example of how education can go beyond textbooks to nurture happier, emotionally balanced, and thoughtful citizens for tomorrow.
