Deepavali 2025: Decorations, Smoke & Festive Foods Could Trigger Allergies in Children — Tips to Stay Safe

Deepavali, the festival of lights, is one of India’s most cherished celebrations. However, along with lamps, sweets and firecrackers comes a hidden concern — allergies and respiratory irritations in children. Doctors warn that decorations, fireworks and festive foods can all act as potential triggers for kids with sensitive airways or allergic tendencies.
🎇 1. Smoke and Air Pollution
During Deepavali, the concentration of particulate matter and smoke in the air rises sharply. Crackers release sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that can irritate the lungs.
Children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, are especially vulnerable.
Paediatricians suggest that children with asthma or bronchitis avoid direct exposure to smoke and stay indoors when cracker activity is at its peak. Using air purifiers and keeping windows closed during fireworks can help.
🪔 2. Dust and Decorative Allergens
Households often bring out stored decorations and diyas that may have gathered dust mites or mould over the year. Artificial flowers, glitter, spray paints and scented candles can also cause sneezing, watery eyes or skin irritation.
Before decorating, it’s advisable to clean or sun-dry items. Opting for natural decorations such as fresh flowers and eco-friendly diyas made from clay can significantly reduce allergic reactions.
🍬 3. Festive Foods and Sweets
Food allergies are another major concern. Many traditional sweets contain nuts, milk, ghee or artificial colouring, which can trigger allergic responses in sensitive children.
Parents should always check ingredients before allowing kids to indulge. Homemade sweets with known ingredients or allergen-free recipes are safer alternatives. Avoiding excessive fried or oily snacks also reduces indigestion and skin flare-ups.
🏠 4. Safe Cleaning Practices
In preparation for Deepavali, many families undertake heavy cleaning and painting. The strong fumes from paints and cleaning agents can cause respiratory irritation. Parents should use mild or natural cleaners, ensure good ventilation, and keep children away during deep cleaning sessions.
🧘 5. Prevention & Care Tips
Encourage children to wear masks if going outdoors during fireworks.
Keep antihistamines or inhalers prescribed by a doctor handy.
Use natural lighting like diyas instead of scented candles.
Opt for eco-friendly crackers or celebrate without firecrackers to reduce smoke exposure.
Maintain hydration and include fruits rich in vitamin C to strengthen immunity.
💬 Expert Advice
Allergy specialists recommend monitoring early symptoms such as coughing, rashes or watery eyes during the festive season. “It’s important for parents to identify what triggers their child’s allergies and plan celebrations accordingly,” says paediatric allergist Dr Meera Nair. “Festivals should be fun, not stressful. A few mindful precautions can make all the difference.”
