World Solar Day: From Ploughs to Panels, Cultivating a Solar-Powered Future

World Solar Day 2025: A Dual Harvest for India's Future

As the world celebrates World Solar Day, there’s growing recognition of the immense potential of solar energy in shaping a sustainable future. One of the most exciting innovations emerging in this space is agrivoltaics, a concept that has the power to transform the agricultural landscape of countries like India.

Back in 1981, German scientists Adolf Goetzberger and Armin Zastrow proposed the idea of using solar panels in agricultural fields, raising them about 2 meters above the ground to allow crops to grow underneath. This novel approach, known as agrivoltaics, has since gained momentum worldwide, combining solar energy generation with food production.

For India, where millions of smallholder farmers are dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, agrivoltaics presents a promising solution. It offers the possibility of dual land use, with farmers able to produce both food and energy — enhancing sustainability while addressing the country’s growing energy needs.
