Authorities in Tibet have begun evacuating the remaining trekkers stranded near Mount Everest after a fierce snowstorm swept through the region over the weekend. The storm, which struck during China’s National Day holidays, trapped hundreds of hikers in the Karma Valley, one of the routes leading to Everest’s eastern face.
According to local officials and Chinese media reports, more than 350 trekkers have already been brought to safety, while the remaining groups are being evacuated in stages due to heavy snow and blocked trails. The sudden storm brought snow, thunder, and freezing winds at altitudes above 4,000 meters, causing tents to collapse and communication lines to fail.
Rescue teams, supported by local villagers and police, have been working in sub-zero conditions to locate and guide trekkers back to safer areas. Tragically, at least one hiker has been reported dead, reportedly due to hypothermia and altitude-related complications.
Authorities have since suspended access to the Mount Everest Scenic Area on the Tibetan side as a precaution, while meteorologists warn of continuing unstable weather in the Himalayas.
The incident has renewed focus on climate-related hazards and preparedness in high-altitude tourism zones. Experts say unpredictable weather patterns and early snowstorms are becoming increasingly common due to climate change, underscoring the need for better early-warning systems and stricter trekking regulations.
