Press Freedom Around the World: A Deep Dive into the Global Media Crisis

Press freedom is a foundational element of any democratic society, ensuring the public’s right to information and holding power to account. However, in 2025, over 70% of countries are facing serious challenges to free journalism. Nations like Norway and Finland rank highest in press freedom due to strong legal protections and transparent governance, while countries such as China, Russia, and North Korea continue to tightly control the media landscape.

India has also seen a concerning decline, dropping to 161st position in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Journalists across the globe face online harassment, legal intimidation, physical threats, and censorship. From forced internet shutdowns to the rise of misinformation, the pressure on independent journalism is mounting.
On World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3, global organizations such as RSF and CPJ continue to advocate for media safety, legal reforms, and unbiased reporting. Protecting press freedom is not just about journalism—it’s about protecting democracy itself.
