‘Peddi’ Movie Review: Ram Charan Shines in an Ambitious but Flawed Sports Drama

Hyderabad, June 8: Ram Charan’s much-awaited sports drama Peddi has hit theatres and is receiving a mixed response from audiences and critics alike. While the film boasts strong performances, stunning visuals, and a powerful musical score, its uneven screenplay prevents it from becoming a complete winner.

Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, Peddi tells the story of a determined young man who battles personal and social challenges while striving to bring pride to his community through sport. The film blends rural drama, emotional conflicts, and high-stakes sporting action on a grand scale.

The biggest highlight of the film is undoubtedly Ram Charan. Delivering one of his most intense performances in recent years, the actor carries the narrative with confidence and charisma. His portrayal of Peddi adds emotional depth to a character that often rises above the limitations of the script.

Another major strength is the music composed by A. R. Rahman. The background score elevates several key moments, adding energy and emotion to the sports sequences and dramatic scenes. Cinematographer R. Rathnavelu also deserves praise for capturing the film’s rural backdrop with rich and striking visuals.

However, Peddi struggles with an overstuffed screenplay. The story attempts to juggle multiple themes and subplots, resulting in pacing issues and moments that feel unnecessarily stretched. While the emotional core remains effective, the narrative often loses focus, reducing the impact of some crucial scenes.

Despite its flaws, Peddi succeeds as a crowd-pleasing entertainer thanks to its technical excellence and Ram Charan’s commanding screen presence. The film may not fully realize its ambitious vision, but it offers enough memorable moments to keep audiences engaged.

Verdict: Peddi is a visually impressive sports drama powered by a stellar Ram Charan performance, A.R. Rahman’s stirring music, and strong technical craftsmanship. A tighter screenplay could have made it a truly exceptional film, but it remains a worthwhile watch for fans of large-scale emotional entertainers. ★★★☆☆ (3/5).
