“Oran Bachao” Protest Reaches Jaipur: Activists Demand Legal Protection for Sacred Lands

A significant grassroots movement, the “Oran Bachao” protest, has intensified in Jaipur as activists demand legal protection for traditional Oran lands. The protest, led by Bhati and supported by a large group of “Oran Premis,” has brought attention to the growing concerns over the preservation of community-conserved sacred groves and grazing lands in Rajasthan.

The movement began nearly three months ago from the revered Tanot Rai Mata Temple in Jaisalmer. Covering an impressive distance of over 750 kilometers, the march reached Bhawani Niketan on Sikar Road, marking a crucial phase of the protest. The long journey reflects the dedication and determination of the protesters to safeguard Oran lands, which hold ecological, cultural, and spiritual significance.

Tensions escalated when hundreds of protesters attempted to march toward the Chief Minister’s residence. However, they were stopped by police near Bhawani Niketan, leading to a brief stand-off. The situation quickly turned tense, with minor scuffles reported between the protesters and law enforcement authorities. Following the confrontation, the demonstrators staged a sit-in protest on the road, enduring extreme weather conditions with temperatures soaring to around 41 degrees Celsius.

At the core of the protest is the demand for formal legal recognition and protection of Oran lands. These lands, traditionally preserved by local communities, serve as vital ecosystems that support biodiversity and provide grazing grounds for livestock. Protest leaders argue that the absence of a clear government policy has left these lands vulnerable to encroachment.

Bhati has strongly criticized the state administration, led by Bhajan Lal Sharma, for failing to establish a structured framework to safeguard Oran areas. According to the protesters, unchecked expansion by solar energy companies and illegal land acquisition by mafias are posing serious threats to these ecologically sensitive zones.

As of now, the protest continues on the streets of Jaipur, with Bhati and his supporters maintaining their presence and intensifying pressure on the government. The leadership has issued a warning that if their demands are not addressed promptly, the movement will expand into a larger, state-wide agitation.

The “Oran Bachao” protest highlights a broader issue concerning environmental conservation and community rights in Rajasthan. It underscores the need for a balanced approach that supports development while protecting traditional ecological systems.

In conclusion, the ongoing protest in Jaipur is not just a local issue but a significant movement advocating for environmental sustainability and cultural preservation. The coming days will be crucial in determining how the government responds to these demands and whether a long-term solution can be achieved.
