🔐 OpenAI May Soon Let Users Sign Into Third-Party Apps Using ChatGPT Accounts

San Francisco, May 28 — OpenAI is exploring a major expansion in how users interact with external applications by potentially allowing ChatGPT accounts to serve as login credentials for third-party apps. The move could position OpenAI as a full-fledged identity provider (IDP) in the digital ecosystem.
On Tuesday, OpenAI released an interest form aimed at app developers, seeking feedback on whether they’d want their users to sign into their platforms via ChatGPT OAuth. This could enable seamless user authentication and account integration across a wide range of applications, similar to Google or Facebook login options.
“We’re exploring a way for users to sign in to your app using ChatGPT accounts,” the company said in its outreach to developers.
🌐 What It Means for Developers and Users
If implemented, OpenAI’s authentication framework could:
Allow single sign-on (SSO) through ChatGPT
Simplify onboarding and reduce login friction
Strengthen user trust by using OpenAI’s security infrastructure
The form targets a broad spectrum of developers—from indie apps with under 1,000 weekly active users to large-scale platforms with up to 100 million users.
🧠 Already in Use: Codex CLI
OpenAI has already begun experimenting with this concept in its Codex CLI platform, where developers can authenticate and access AI features using their ChatGPT accounts. This small-scale rollout is seen as a pilot for broader OAuth implementation.
