In a groundbreaking announcement, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have confirmed plans to co-develop a permanent lunar research station, with a target launch date set for 2030. This project is seen as a major leap forward for both nations in their pursuit of advanced space exploration.

The lunar base, planned for the Moon’s south polar region, will support long-duration human and robotic missions, focusing on lunar science, mineral exploration, and deep-space research. The collaboration will also integrate elements of NASA's Artemis program and ISRO's post-Chandrayaan lunar ambitions. The mission includes shared technology development, crew training, payload deployment, and data-sharing agreements.
Both agencies have agreed to jointly contribute to modules, communication systems, and environmental control technologies needed for long-term habitation. The lunar station will also serve as a testing ground for future Mars missions and interplanetary exploration.
Experts say this partnership marks a strategic shift from space competition to global cooperation, aligning with the new age of multinational space alliances. It also highlights India’s growing role as a key player in global space innovation.
