Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is undertaking a major reorganisation of its artificial‐intelligence division by cutting roughly 600 roles in its Superintelligence Labs unit.
The cuts will primarily affect established teams including the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) unit, product-AI teams and AI infrastructure groups.
Meanwhile, the newly formed TBD Lab — focused on next-generation foundation models — remains untouched and continues recruitment for its elite research mission.
In an internal memo, Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said the reason for the reduction was that the prior team structure had become “overly bureaucratic,” and that by reducing headcount the remaining team members will have “more scope and impact” and fewer decision layers.
Meta is encouraging those affected to apply for other roles within the company.
This shift comes amid Meta’s broader ambitions in AI — including large-scale data centre projects and the company’s push towards “superintelligence” technologies.
The move signals a strategic pivot: while the company is trimming parts of its older AI organisation, it is doubling down on its highest-profile AI research efforts. This may reflect pressure to convert heavy investment into concrete product and research outcomes, and a desire to streamline operations in a highly competitive AI landscape.
