Mamata Banerjee Donates ₹5 Lakh Gold Broom to Jagannath Temple in Digha, Joins Yagna Ahead of Inauguration
Digha, April 29, 2025: In a symbolic gesture of devotion and tradition, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday donated a gold broom worth ₹5 lakh to the newly constructed Jagannath temple in Digha. The donation was made ahead of the temple’s grand inauguration scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, when the shrine will officially open its doors to the public.
Banerjee also took part in a ceremonial yagna (ritual fire worship), held as part of the temple's inauguration festivities. The temple, modeled on the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is set to become a major religious and tourist destination in West Bengal’s coastal town of Digha.
A Devotional Gesture
The golden broom offered by Banerjee is seen as a gesture echoing the tradition followed during the ‘Chhera Pahara’ ritual in Puri, where even kings and top dignitaries symbolically sweep the temple premises to express humility before Lord Jagannath. The Chief Minister’s offering has been widely discussed for both its spiritual symbolism and the grandeur of the gesture.
Jagannath Temple Digha: A New Landmark
The Jagannath temple in Digha has been under construction for several years and has finally reached completion. Designed to reflect Odisha’s classic Kalinga-style architecture, the temple features intricate carvings, a towering spire, and space for thousands of devotees.
The government has positioned the temple as a boost to religious tourism in the region, expecting large footfall throughout the year, particularly during festivals like Rath Yatra.
Public Opening and Inaugural Schedule
The inaugural ceremony on April 30 will include Vedic rituals, bhajans, and cultural programs. After the completion of the main rituals, the temple will be thrown open to the public for darshan (viewing of the deity).
