India’s Smartphone Manufacturing Goal: Home-Grown Brands Set to Emerge in 18 Months

India is rapidly moving towards becoming a global hub for smartphone manufacturing, with the government setting ambitious goals to strengthen domestic production and innovation. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently stated that India is on track to establish home-grown smartphone brands within the next 18 months. This announcement highlights a major shift in India’s role in the global electronics ecosystem—from being primarily a manufacturing base for foreign companies to creating globally competitive Indian brands.
Over the past few years, India has made significant progress in smartphone manufacturing under initiatives like Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Today, India is one of the largest smartphone manufacturing countries in the world, producing millions of devices annually for both domestic use and exports. However, much of this production has been led by global brands. The government’s new focus is on moving beyond assembly and manufacturing toward design, branding, and innovation led by Indian companies.
According to Minister Vaishnaw, the ecosystem required to support indigenous smartphone brands—such as component manufacturing, semiconductor development, skilled manpower, and supply chains—is maturing rapidly. With increasing investments in electronics manufacturing, chip fabrication, and research and development, India is building the foundation needed to compete with established global players like Apple, Samsung, and Chinese smartphone brands.
The emergence of home-grown smartphone brands would mark a significant milestone for India’s technology sector. It would not only reduce dependence on imports but also create high-value jobs, encourage innovation, and boost exports. Indian brands would be better positioned to understand local consumer needs, offer cost-effective solutions, and cater to emerging markets with similar requirements.
