In a tragic incident, a wild tusker was killed after being struck by the Shalimar-Baripada Express train near Jugal railway station in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district late on Saturday night (November 1, 2025). The accident occurred around 11:50 p.m., when the elephant was reportedly crossing the railway tracks that pass through a known wildlife corridor.
Forest and railway officials reached the site shortly after being informed. Preliminary reports suggest the elephant was part of a herd that had been moving through the area in search of food and water. The impact of the collision proved fatal for the tusker, while the train sustained minor damage.
Wildlife activists have once again raised concerns over the frequent movement of trains through elephant habitats, calling for better coordination between the Forest Department and Indian Railways. Measures such as speed restrictions, alert systems, and patrolling in vulnerable stretches are being recommended to prevent such incidents.
Odisha has witnessed several similar accidents in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety protocols and the creation of dedicated elephant corridors to ensure the protection of these endangered animals.
