AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton Warns: Mass Layoffs Inevitable — Except for This Job

AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton Warns: Mass Layoffs Inevitable — Except for This Job

June 18, 2025 | London:
Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” has raised fresh concerns about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its potential to disrupt millions of jobs across industries. In a recent interview, Hinton emphasized that mass layoffs are no longer a distant threat—they are inevitable.

🧠 From Neural Nets to Real-World Impacts

Hinton, whose pioneering work in neural networks helped lay the foundation for today’s AI systems like ChatGPT, has now become one of the technology’s most vocal critics when it comes to its societal consequences.

“We're approaching a point where machines can do most cognitive tasks better than humans,” said Hinton. “This will affect jobs across finance, law, programming, and even medicine.”

🔧 Why Plumbing May Be the Safest Bet

Interestingly, Hinton offered a surprising piece of career advice: consider becoming a plumber. According to him, jobs that require manual dexterity, physical presence, and problem-solving in real-world environments are among the least likely to be automated.

“It’s incredibly hard to get a robot into a home to fix a leaking pipe. That kind of job is future-proof for a long time,” he said.

📉 The Bigger Picture

Hinton’s remarks come amid rising anxieties over AI replacing human roles. Industries such as customer service, data entry, content writing, and even parts of healthcare are already witnessing AI integration.

Several tech firms have recently announced AI-driven workforce reductions, sparking debates about ethical responsibility and the need for upskilling and reskilling initiatives.

📌 Conclusion

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at breakneck speed, even one of its creators is now sounding the alarm. While white-collar jobs may be under threat, blue-collar and skilled trades like plumbing may ironically offer more security in the AI-dominated future.
