Acid Attacks in India: Reality Behind the Numbers and Rising Concerns

Acid attacks remain a disturbing form of gender-based violence in India, with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reporting an average of 200 cases per year. However, according to NGOs and independent researchers, the real figure may be much higher—crossing 1,000 annually, due to severe underreporting, social stigma, and lack of support for victims. Most survivors are women, often targeted due to rejected advances or domestic conflicts.

States like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Delhi report the highest number of such incidents. Despite Supreme Court orders regulating acid sales, enforcement remains weak in many parts of the country. Stronger laws, rehabilitation support, and better policing are urgently needed to tackle this brutal crime and protect future generations from such horrific violence.
